Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
